Top Five

Chris Rock's aggressively unfunny "Top Five" proves that he can make a picture as unenjoyable as Woody Allen's "Stardust Memories." Now all he needs to give us are thirty or forty classic films and he'll be right up there. 

Trance

I'm always intrigued when I see Rosario Dawson's name on the cast list of a new movie. She has a nose for quality scripts, from "Shattered Glass," "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints," and "Unstoppable" to a couple of undervalued gems: Ed Burns' "Sidewalks of New York," which snuck onto my top-ten list in 2001, and last year's underseen college-reunion comedy "10 Years." Dawson has seen her share of dogs, but often her presence sends the signal that there's something more to a movie than you might think.

10 Years

The high-school-reunion comedy "10 Years" got lost in the shuffle of new releases this weekend, which is a shame. It's an audacious amount of fun, about as good as a movie of its aspirations could be. Sure, some of the cast are old enough that maybe it should have been called "15 Years" (there are a few Gabrielle-Carteris-on-"90210" moments), but you'll be too caught up in its combination of sharp dialogue and sweet nostalgia to mind.
