Far Out Isn't Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story
At one time, Tomi Ungerer was the most popular children's book author in America, until his other books - of pornographic art - got his kids' stories banned from libraries and taken out of print.
Brad Bernstein's biodoc "Far Out Isn't Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story" introduces us to the somewhat reclusive Ungerer and suggests the effect growing up in Alsace - a region that has changed hands several times between France and Germany - had on his work and worldview. Unfortunately, Ungerer proves a less than compelling subject; the animations aren't especially interesting; and Ungerer tends to respond to interview questions with answers that feel canned even when witty.
